In terms of employment, there were approximately 198 advertised geospatial related job opportunities in 2021. The Kenya County government led in terms of numbers of advertisements of opportunities majorly in Land Survey, Physical Planning, Cartography, Photogrammetry and GIS. The national government and parastatals followed with same category of job opportunities. The jobs ranges from the lowest rank of government job groups to the highest, often Director level.
In Humanitarian field, often their focus are GIS skills that can support effective humanitarian assistance programs. This ranges from needs/situation assessments, data management, analysis and link to other humanitarian actors during disasters or conflicts in war zones.
Universities and TVET colleges departments offering geospatial degrees are required to hire technicians to support the teaching staff in practicals assignments. The Kenya institutional capacity is still low mainly because single geospatial discipline focused courses are still few. As more technical colleges - TVET and universities get government green light based on the new TVET education policy to teach geospatial courses, likely demand for technicians and tutors shall increase in coming years.
Kenya is a host to many regional and international bodies like the United Nations-UN, Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development - RCMRD, International Livestock Research Institute - ILRI among research institutions. While some geospatial jobs are reserved for the nationals, some are open for internationals.
