Geographic Information System- GIS
Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system that captures, stores, manipulates, analyzes, manages and displays all kinds of spatial (geographical) data, i.e., data that can be referenced to locations on the earth. Can also be defined as software that captures geographic data for the purpose of manipulation, viewing and analysis in whichever context and parameters the user desires or needs. It can be used to analyse spatial data or geographic information for any given and possible purpose. A key feature of GIS is that some of the data has to be spatial, i.e., the data has X and Y coordinates. A lot of data can be input into a GIS that will build up on the spatial data, e.g., a hospital; the actual location of the hospital is the spatial database. Additional data, e.g., name of the hospital, number of staff, how many patients visit the hospital in a certain month would be input in the GIS. From such data, the hospital would be able to determine, for example, whether it is overstaffed or understaffed. Another key feature of GIS is that the final product will be a digital map. A GIS map is different from other visuals because it easily shows patterns and relationships that may not be clear in tables or charts. GIS mapping allows multiple layers of information to be displayed on one map.
Main softwares we use in GIS training: ArcGIS and QGIS
