Introduction
Integrating Livelihoods through Communication Information Technology for Africa (ILICIT Africa) is a non-profit organization that seeks to enhance livelihoods of indigenous communities, enterprises and organizations through adoption of ICT as an enabler of innovative approaches to solve humanitarian challenges within African Region. ILICIT Africa has presence in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria and Malawi. ILICIT Africa in partnership with OSGeo Foundation, MapServer, Digital Natives, and NITA - U is organising the inaugural Geo4Africa Summit 2017 be held in Kampala Uganda.

The Idea for having the Geo4Africa summit first appeared after ILICIT Africa was invited to attend the Geo for Good User summit in San Francisco, CA, USA in 2013 which aimed to enhance the adoption of Geo tools for organizations. Following various trainings, ILICIT Africa conducted a Geo Tools for Monitoring and Evaluation Workshop, Enhancing Data collection using Geo Tools, to mention a few, there was a need to expound the capacity of organizations within the Africa Region in Geographic Information Systems.

ILICIT Africa having identified challenges in Monitoring and Evaluation amongst organizations in Uganda conducted a hands training in Geo Tools for Monitoring and Evaluation that held in partnership with the National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U) and Ministry of ICT. With a comprehensive follow up there was a need to engage more organizations within Africa to extensively be engaged in the use of Geo Tools.
The Geo4Afirca 2017 summit originates after an overwhelming demand for organisations, Individuals and various stakeholders having the urge to build the capacity of their staff to incorporate Geo tools in their day to day operations and visualization of data using innovative approaches.

About ILICIT Africa
Organization’s vision is to promote the use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) to solve challenges affected by indigenous communities and organizations as key stakeholders in livelihood enhancement as part of African development. It also aims to build the digital capacity of organization to adapt to ICT to enhance livelihoods for Indigenous communities within the African continent.

ILICIT Africa objectives
The foundation aims to achieve the following objectives:

• To build digital literacy in indigenous communities
• To enhance the development of Knowledge system and local content development within the key drivers of African Economies i.e. Agriculture, Education, Health, Policies
• To build capacity and influence policy development for livelihood enhancement
• To build knowledge systems that enhance digital transfer, communication empowerment and visualizations of knowledge systems
• To ensure that government have constant discussion with their respective citizens through ICT and National Information and Communication Infrastructure that is available

Objectives
1. To expand the Geo Tools community practices to community engagement and knowledge sharing
2. To identify the ways to measure a “successful high quality implementation” of Geo Tools and why it is important to visualize data with geo tools.
3. To understand ways in which Geo Tools outputs can be used to positively impact the quality of data visualizations
4. Reinforce or introduce your company’s presence to GIS professionals who drive the adoption of technology within their organizations.
5. Cultivate new and existing customer relationships face-to-face…still the most effective method for developing lasting business connections.

Who should attend?
• Government and public servants
• Experienced GIS implementers who want to share their experiences and learn from others
• GIS developers and Providers – anyone building systems to integrate with or extend GIS
• People new to GIS Systems who want to connect to others using the platform around the world
•  You!

Why you should attend
This event provides an opportunity for developers to collaborate and improve their technical skills in GIS, implementers to share their best practices from implementations, and users to propose and prioritize their top features in future releases of GIS software.

Propose session ideas
It’s a conference, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start thinking about ideas today. Do you want to lead a session? Do you have an idea for what you’d like to see, even if you can’t lead the session? Stay tuned to the summit in June 2017 for details about proposing session ideas.

Pre Event Geo4Africa 2017 Hackathon/Code Sprint
To enhance geographical information systems in Innovation the summit will precede a hackathon for current and new GIS contributors, which will take place 2 days before the event starting on the 7th July 2017 to Sunday 9th July 2017.

The Geo4Africa Hackathon/CodeSprint aims to bring together 150 innovators and software developers across Africa to  hack down challenges encountered  in the African Continent and develop Innovative Geo Based solutions.

The Awards will be given during the closing ceremony of the Geo4Africa Summit 2017. To enhance multi national cooperation and collaboration within the region, the Hackathon aims to bring atleast 2 members from each African country maximum priority will be given to the nationals of East Africa.

Participants will be challenged to use geospatial data to develop maps, mobile applications, visual aids and to leverage a variety of technological tools to create innovative solutions to address selected challenges encountered within Africa region and its impact. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals to hone their skills in innovative problem solving, geospatial research, program/policy design, to contribute towards development.
