History of GIS, What is Geographic Information Systems (GIS)? . In 1854, a cholera outbreak hit London, England. The British physician
John Snow decided to plot cholera outbreak cases as points on a map. The
cholera map showed that cases of the disease was found along a water
line. The visualization of the cholera cases found the source of the
outbreak – a contaminated water pipe. The amazing thing about John
Snow’s cholera map was that he used it to predict future cholera cases. Consequently,
his work helped the council decide to disconnect the water pump. This
example shows the power of GIS. It led to better decision-making and
saved lives. Snow’s cholera map was a major event connecting geography
and public health safety. Interestingly, it was also one of the founding
events for the field of epidemiology – the study of the spread of
disease.
Else Keep it #GIS, Keep it #RemoteSensing, GEO is the way to go.
